Why “only three wrong” feels tight
A 32/35 pass mark sounds high because it is. Around 30% of Kiwi teens don’t pass on the first try — often from a handful of weak topics, not from “not studying enough.”
That’s why practice should look like the real exam: multi-choice pressure, careful reading, and a habit of fixing misses before you book. A resit costs time (and eventually money) — especially with licence rule changes from 25 January 2027 making delays more expensive for under‘25s.
What the questions cover
Expect NZ Road Code topics such as:
- Road rules and give-way decisions
- Signs and road markings
- Intersections and roundabouts
- Parking and stopping
- Safe driving and hazard awareness
Questions are drawn from the Road Code. Studying an outdated quiz bank is a common way to feel ready and still miss the real wording on the day.
If you fail
- Your learner application fee usually includes a second attempt
- Fail twice on the same day → wait 10 working days before sitting again
- Further attempts attract an extra test fee
Best strategy: don’t book until mock scores stay high and your weak spots are cleared.
How to practise for 32/35
- Quiz the Road Code daily — short sessions beat cramming. See Road Code practice.
- Sit exam-style mocks — treat them like dress rehearsals for the 35-question format. More context in the theory test guide.
- Clear review mistakes — three careless gaps are enough to fail. Use review mistakes until repeats stop.
- Book when ready — then read carefully on the day.
